The thought of starting your own business can be overwhelming, scary and can often remain a pipe dream – but for those who take the leap, the chance to create and grow something that is truly their own is exciting, exhilarating and liberating.
As part of the exciting work we do, the Online Experts team at 123 Reg have the opportunity to take a sneak-peek at many start-up business ventures and the budding entrepreneurs behind them.
Our team works closely with talented individuals across the country, focusing their passion into a carefully planned and considered online presence – an essential step towards getting their brand found by a larger audience.
This month we shine the spotlight on Kevin Cooper, founder of Plumb4You and passionate entrepreneur, to learn about his journey to success and get his advice on how you could achieve the same.
Tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to found Plumb4You?
After I had initially qualified as a plumber, I began working for several firms, but was always frustrated by the lack of professionalism I observed – it made the work itself less enjoyable and was often completely avoidable.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and set up my own business. I figured this would allow me to offer a flexible service that was completely under my control and that didn’t make the same mistakes I had seen other companies make.
What’s it like running your own business? Describe your typical day.
When you are your own boss, running a business can be very stressful at times, but overall I really get a kick out of it.
As all our jobs are confirmed and scheduled in advance, you always know roughly what to expect when you set off in the morning – whether it’s a quick fix, a longer more complex contract or a site visit to quote for potential new work. That’s not to say there isn’t a fair share of surprises.
What do you love most about running your own business?
For me, the thing I love most is the freedom and flexibility that comes with being self-employed. I also find running the business itself, ensuring you are making money and delivering a great service is challenging but very fulfilling.
There is nothing quite like the kind words of a customer who is blown away by the work you have done – it’s a huge part of why we do what we do.
Is there anything you would have done differently?
Not a single thing. The journey wasn’t always easy and I’ve faced my fair share of challenges like any other start-up would, however, overcoming these is a fantastic feeling and you are always learning as you go.
What advice would you give to somebody thinking of starting their own business?
Be prepared for busy times but also quiet times. It could switch from one to the other with very little notice, so make sure you keep an open mind when business is slow and make the most of it when it’s heaving – in the end it all balances out.
Always push yourself. The more you put in, the more you get out, and this is particularly true when you’re running your own business.
Above all though you have to keep your customers happy. If you give them a first class service, they will likely be repeat business and find you more customers through word of mouth. Always respond to emails, be polite and greet people with a warm smile – it really does make a difference.
Why did you choose to create a new website for your business?
We wanted to make sure our business has an online home that is modern, professional and easy to use – just like our services. We felt that our previous website looked old and outdated, so it was time for a big revamp.
Who is your target audience?
Our services are aimed primarily at homeowners and commercial business owners looking to renovate or expand, as well as those who need an issue fixed quickly.
As the business has matured, we have also found a great amount of uptake from estate and lettings agents who need to ensure properties are fit for new tenants and buyers.
What are the aims/objectives of your site?
Ultimately the goal is to generate more work for us, but we also know it is important to provide customers with an all-in-one hub that can be easily accessed and that contains all the info they need.
This means a much better customer experience, as they can quickly and easily understand who you are, what you do and why they should choose you over the competition.
Which part of the website do you love the most?
All of it – the team have really understood our objectives and created something special to showcase our skills to the wider online world.
