Frequently asked questions
What is Domain Ownership and Privacy Protection?
It’s a service that provides your domain with advanced security and protection by locking domain management features behind 2-step verification. For more details on this, please read the following article: How do I enable 2-step verification on my account?
Domain Ownership Protection also comes with free domain privacy included, which ensures that your personal information is private and hidden from the registry and the WHOIS database.
How do I buy Domain Ownership Protection for my domain?
You can buy DOP at the same time as your domain name via the checkout page.
If, however, you’ve already purchased your domain, this can be done directly through your 123 Reg Control Panel.
Simply select the domain name you wish to protect and click Manage. You will then be taken to the Management page for your chosen domain. From there, select the option ‘Buy Domain Ownership Protection’ and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the checkout process.
Do I need to have Domain Ownership Protection for my domain?
No, although it is something that any aspiring entrepreneur or business owner should strongly consider.
If you're not sure whether domain privacy protection is worth it, remember that cybercrime and hacking attempts have increased by up to 600% over the past few years. By having privacy protection in place for your domain, your details won't be made publicly available on the WHOIS database, making it harder for any malicious hackers to target you.
Which domain names can I get Domain Ownership Protection for?

How long can I buy Domain Ownership Protection for?
You can purchase Domain Ownership Protection for periods of anywhere between one to ten years.
However, we recommend that you purchase this service for the same, or on a similar, length as the domain you wish to protect. That way, you can renew both items together.
How does the 90-day holding period work?
Can I remove Domain Ownership Protection?
If you decide that you would like to deactivate your Domain Ownership Protection package, you can do this through your Control Panel. For details on how to do this, please read the following article: How do I cancel or disable Domain Ownership Protection for my domains?
However, once you have cancelled or disabled your DOP service, your domain will no longer benefit from identity protection, theft protection and guaranteed renewal.
If you have some time left on your package and decide that you’d like to reactivate it, you can do so from your Control Panel.
What information will be displayed for my domain names?
To ensure maximum privacy, we will display a proxy physical address, email address and phone number on the WHOIS database, instead of your own details.
Can I choose what information to display in the WHOIS database?
No. There are strict regulations on what information can be displayed. It is important for members of the public to be able to contact you if they have a question. The contactprivacy.com details ensure this is still possible.
How will I be contacted if my details are hidden?
If anyone wants to contact you regarding your domain name, they will need to complete a short form that must include their email address and their reason for contacting you. All this information will then be sent to the email address that’s associated with your domain. Your email address won’t be shared with them during this process.
