This guide will explain how you can add a 302 (Temporary) Web forwarding to your domain name.
302 (Temporary) web forwarding can be useful when you wish to add a forward that you will remove in the future. For example, if you run a website for a restaurant, you could use a 302 to forward visitors from your main domain (i.e. ‘your-restaurant.co.uk’) to a special Christmas menu page during the Festive period (i.e. ‘your-restaurant.co.uk/xmas-menu/’).
However, since 302 web forwarding tells search engines to continue checking the domain name, you should only use this option when you know you’ll be changing the forwarding settings again soon. Otherwise, the final destination page may not get indexed properly. If you’re not sure which type of forwarding to use, permanent web forwarding is the safer option.
If you’re using our legacy Control panel, you can choose from two different options when you come to set up 302 web forwarding: Framed and Non-Framed. These perform the following:
- Framed Web forwarding – forward your domain to a URL, single directory or file (e.g. http://domain.com or http://domain.com/directory/ or http://domain.com/index.htm). The URL in the browser address bar will be replaced by co.uk
- Non-Framed Web forwarding – this can be used to forward to a new URL, single directory or file (e.g. http://domain.com or http://domain.com/directory/ or http://domain.com/index.htm) but will show the full URL in the browser address bar
Before you get started though, you’ll need to ensure your domain is pointed to the 123 Reg nameservers. Otherwise, any configurations you’ve made to the DNS through our Control Panel will not take effect.
You will need to set your DNS at your nameserver provider. For more information on how to do this, please view the following article: How do I change the nameservers for my domain name?
Please note: it will take between 24-48 hours for any new nameserver changes to become active.
Secondly, you will need to ensure that any other records pointing to the web forwarding IP address (i.e. A, CNAME) are removed.
Once you’ve done all this, simply follow these instructions:
Start by logging in to your 123 Reg Control Panel.
Next, select Manage All opposite Domains within the ‘All Products and Services’ section.
You will now see a complete list of your purchased domain names. Select which one you wish to update from the provided list by clicking the checkbox next to it.
If you can’t find your domain in this list, you may be able to find it on the Domain Name Overview page within our legacy Control Panel. For more details on this, please read the following article: How do I access and manage my products?
If you’re using our current Control Panel, click Forward in the bar that appears below. If you can’t see this option, click More instead and you will find it within the menu that appears.
If you’re using our legacy Control Panel, select Web forwarding within the Domain Basics section.
If you’re using our current Control Panel, a pop-up window will appear where you will see several forwarding options. Select Temporary (302).
If you’re using our legacy Control Panel, you’ll be taken to a new page instead, which will show a list of your domains. Select Edit for the domain you wish to add a forwarder to and then, on the next page, click the Temporary forwarding (302 redirect) tab.
If you’re using our current Control Panel, enter the link or URL you want visitors to be directed to within the provided field and click Continue
If you’re using our legacy Control Panel, choose whether you want to use Framed or Non-Framed Web Forwarding and then enter the link or URL that you would like to forward to into the provided field. If you chose to use Framed Web Forwarding, you will be asked to add some additional information to help search engines index your temporary page effectively. Once you’ve done this, click Confirm.
After a few moments, your 302 forwarder will be set up.
You won’t need to do anything else as we will automatically update your domain’s DNS records to incorporate our default forwarding IP address: 94.136.40.82
