This article applies to all UK domain names (i.e. .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .uk, etc)
An IPS Tag is a way of Nominet (the not-for-profit organisation that governs .uk domain names) giving control of a domain name to a certain company. If you want to move your domain name to another provider, you would need to change the IPS Tag to that of your new provider.
Please note: before proceeding, you’ll need to make sure that your domain isn’t locked. In addition to this, if you have an older version of our Domain Ownership Protection service (purchased before August 2023) in place on your domain, you may need to disable this service. For details on how to do this, please read the following articles:
- How do I turn off Domain Ownership Protection (‘DOP’) for my domains?
- How do I lock/unlock my domain name?
If, however, you have our current Domain Ownership Protection service (purchased after August 2023) assigned to your domain, please continue reading.
To change your domain name’s IPS Tag, you will need to do the following:
Start by logging in to your 123 Reg Control Panel.
Next, select Manage All opposite Domains within the ‘All Products and Services’ section.
You will now see a complete list of your purchased domain names. Select the domain you want to update from the provided list.
If you can’t find your domain in this list, you may be able to find it on the Domain Name Overview page within our legacy Control Panel. For more details on this, please read the following article: How do I access and manage my products?
This will take you to the overview page for your chosen domain. If you’re using our current Control Panel, select Transfer to Another Registrar in the Transfer section.
If you’re using our legacy Control Panel, select IPS Tag within the Domain Transfers section.
Enter your new IPS tag into the provided space and click Complete Transfer (if using our current Control Panel) or Change IPS TAG Now (if using our legacy Control Panel) to confirm your changes.
If you’ve enabled Domain Ownership Protection on your domain, you will need to verify your identity. This can be done via 2-Step Verification or by entering the one-time password that will be sent to your email address.
Enter your code into the provided field and click Verify.
Once you have changed the IPS Tag, 123 Reg will remove the DNS and forwarding services for your domain in 48 hours. If your new provider does not set up DNS on their servers and update your domain within that period, your website may become unavailable. The domain will also be removed from your Control Panel as we cannot make changes to it once the tag has been changed.
Please note: it should only take a couple of minutes for this to update. However, some providers have a ‘handshake’ system where they will need to approve the transfer in and therefore the IPS tag may not update automatically. Please check with your new provider if they have this process in place, so that they can approve the transfer once you have changed the TAG.
