This article will tell you what happens if you don’t renew your domain name.
If you don’t renew your domain name, it will eventually expire and be released onto the open market. This means that anyone can purchase your domain, undoing all your hard work. This also means that you won’t be able to use your domain with your associated website and email address, effectively cutting off your services.
Before this happens though, your domain may enter a ‘grace period’ where you can still renew it for no additional fee. Depending on your domain’s extension, this could be anywhere between 30 to 90 days, although some extensions don’t have a grace period at all.
If you don’t renew your domain during this time, then it may enter a ‘redemption period’. During this time, you will have one last chance to renew your domain, of which you will have to pay a recovery fee of £75 (plus VAT) on top of the 1-year renewal fee. This period is typically 30 days long, but this may vary depending on your domain’s extension.
Domains can expire for a number of reasons, such as the original payment method no longer working or because the domain wasn’t set to auto-renew. By default, 123 Reg Domain Names are set to renew automatically, but if you’d prefer to renew it manually, you can do that also.
