A Virtual Private Server or VPS is a server that is divided into a small number of virtual machines that share resources. Each one is completely “private” from the other instances and functions the same as a regular server.
Since multiple Virtual Servers are running under one set of server hardware, the running costs are significantly lower than having your own physical server. You’ll even get one month free with our annual plans, which applies to renewals as well.
Do I need technical knowledge to use a Virtual Private Server?
Yes, a basic level of technical knowledge is required. We also recommend that you have some previous experience in managing a server. While server management software like Plesk and cPanel does simplify the whole process, the intricate nature of Virtual Private Servers means that any unbridled changes can cause technical issues and server failures.

How long does it take to set up?
Although we typically provision Virtual Private Servers within minutes, it can take up to 24 hours or longer, depending on the duration of our background checks. If you need your VPS sooner, please call us and we’ll do our best to speed things up.

Can I host several websites on a VPS?
Yes! Since VPS Hosting is more flexible and versatile than traditional Web Hosting, you can configure your setup to host multiple websites by allocating enough space for each site.
Can you help me move my VPS across from another provider?
No. Sorry, but every virtual hosting provider is different, and that makes it hard for us to offer a transfer service. However, our Virtual Server packages do use technology that is considered standard, so there’s a very good chance your website or server configuration will be compatible.
Linux VPS or Windows VPS – which one is right for me?
If you need a secure and flexible platform, then we recommend going for a Linux VPS. Not only does this option come with built-in malware protection, but it’s also compatible with both Plesk and cPanel (whereas Windows only supports Plesk), making it a highly versatile choice.
If, however, you’re not very familiar with the intricate nature of VPS Hosting, then a Windows VPS may be the better choice, thanks to its straightforward graphical user interface. Its Remote Desktop Connection feature also provides a simpler way of managing your server, compared to Linux’s text-heavy Secure Shell (SSH) protocol, and allows you to access your VPS from anywhere. Furthermore, if your website was built on an ASP.NET framework, then a Windows VPS will complement your setup perfectly and optimise your site’s performance.
What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?
With a dedicated server, the full resources are at the customer’s disposal, making it perfect for highly demanding websites or applications. A VPS is a server that is split into separate segments; each segment behaves like an individual server. This means that a number of Virtual Servers can exist on a single machine which reduces the cost, but still offers high performance.
Can I buy a VPS without a domain name?
Yes. A Virtual Private Server does not require a domain to work as the IP address can be used instead. However, you can register or transfer a domain to your server whenever you wish.
I already own a domain name. Can I use it with my server?
Yes. Just transfer the domain to your 123 Reg account and you will be able to use it.
My domain name is held with another company. Can I point it at my 123 Reg VPS?
Sure! Simply configure your domain with your current provider to point to the IP address of your Virtual Server, which can easily be found in your 123 Reg Control Panel. Once this is complete, you can set up the domain on your server to host your website.
Is there a minimum contract period?
You can buy VPS hosting on either a monthly or annual basis. This gives you the freedom to control your own contract period.
How does the money-back guarantee work?
If you decide the virtual hosting package you’ve bought isn’t right for you, give us a call within the first 14 days. We’ll refund what you paid – excluding the cost of registering any domain names you have, because domains can’t be “unregistered” once you’ve chosen them.
